You describe it perfectly. I fell in love with the Maria Callas aria in the movie Philadelphia. Bought 3 CDs of hers , then 3 tenors and now I’m a fanatic! Joan Sutherland is my favorite but I have so much to learn! Thank you for all you share! Also, I am so thankful to be able to watch the Met Operas at the movies! So special!
'Acquired taste' resonates. In the town I grew up in, even my mom's classical record collection was 'weird' amongst the local pop-country fans. So I've kept it pretty quiet that I sing classical/opera arias as a personal practice, even though it's not the genre I share publicly. But when I do tell someone, it's always fun and surprising when they say 'oh that's so cool, I LOVE opera' :) I would think that in these times where everyone seems to love all the drama on social media, opera would be way more popular--doesn't get much more dramatic than that!
