The original design was for a larger building, but it was cut back in the budget process.

Pavarotti, Marilyn Horne and Joan also appeared here in a Gala concert. A clip is shown on CUNY Arts on a regular basis.

I went to the Sydney Opera House once, in 2000 when I was there for the Olympics. Sadly I remember a lot about the Olympics but very little about the Opera. I recall the constumes and the stage was spectacular but I can’t recall anything about the performance itself…

If you're willing to create an account with Opera Australia you can watch quite a few performances, many with Joan Sutherland in the title role (several gala concerts as well): https://www.stagewhispers.com.au/news/opera-australia-now-streaming-5-free-operas-and-more

I loved the duet. Sutherland was magnificent.

My mother introduced me to opera when I was young, and then I rediscovered it in my 20s. It was in the late 1970s that I listened to the Met Radio every week. I heard the rising stars Pavarotti and Domingo. Then I returned home for Christmas and my mother was head over heels for Pavarotti. I said, Mom, there are other great tenors." She said, "Name one," and I replied, "Placido Domingo." The next time I returned home she was mad for Domingo. For the rest of her life she went to as many performances as she could, bought all the recordings and videos she could, and went back stage as often as she could. I have inherited those recordings.
