This week's Opera Daily features an opera about one day in the lives of three women, from three different times and places
oh wow, thanks for calling my attention to this piece with these three women.
Lovely!
Now I want to see and hear the Metropolitan Opera's production of "The Hours" in its entirety. Not only have I fallen in love with these snippets of music, but I may have discovered a contemporary opera that doesn't make me grit my teeth and go racing back to the classical opera canon. The stars - Renée Fleming, Joyce DiDonato, Kelli O'Hara, Kyle Ketelsen and William Burden - have such beautiful voices. I was also glad to see in the shadows, my favorite countertenor John Holiday. Truth be told, even though they had flashed across my radar, I was never interested until today in Virginia Woolf, her novel, Mrs. Dalloway, or the film "The Hours". So, did a quick search on the author (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Woolf), the books (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs_Dalloway; https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11899.The_Hours) the film (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0274558/), and a few reviews (https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/23/arts/music/the-hours-opera-review.html; https://www.washingtonpost.com/music/2022/11/23/metropolitan-opera-the-hours/; https://www.vulture.com/2022/11/opera-review-the-hours-metropolitan.html). When works of art in literature, music, film transcend their boundaries and make common cause with the artworks of other creators, a new thing (and good things like this) can happen.
thank you for sharing! I agree me too - I am going to go back and watch the film again! (I think I saw it when it came out but I can't remember much)
