Thank you Michele, for this very significant and thought-provoking "throwback". I would just add two other factors that go to form a culture: customs and traditions, including traditional music. I'm sure there are others, as well. Regarding opera, I will strive to regard it and listen to it more as a cultural work, and not merely entertainment.

Culture is imbedded and is often the driving force in our lives , including entertainment
Opera is not Euro-Trash in Weimar not Verdi; Coney Island not Mozart; Las Vegas with fake mikes etc.
