Love this comment from a reader I just received:

"Just imagine if Corelli had been born 10 years later how far reaching his persona would have been!

TV and opera for the masses didn’t really hit till the late 70s culminating with the 3 tenors. Sadly opera to the masses today is Andrea Bocelli. It could have been Corelli and your subscriptions would have reached 100,000 overnight."

Quite true. And the Met squanders every PBS broadcast now as a throwaway if you can find it on PBS to begin with. Bocelli e finito a questo punto; now it's just the money.

Having heard Corelli do TOSCA with Grace Bumbry they were both good at The Met. Bumbry began singing soprano roles and TOSCA was the first one. Franco was always a bundle of nerves but Mario was his alter ego on stage. Bumbry also did Chrerubini's MEDEA at NYCity Opera now being done at The Met decades later.

Was fortunate to hear Corelli in his farewell recital at Symphony Hall in Newark. He included some aria's from OTELLO. Colleagues than said he retired too soon---but his stage fright was an underlying issue. Nonetheless he was gripping and brilliant.
