Welcome to the Wednesday edition of Opera Daily, the best opera community on the internet. Thank you to everyone who shared their interest and feedback with us on Listening Club. If you missed the post where we announced our new membership-based community launching January 15th, please take a look
While at LaScala I appeared in BOHEME. Kleiber was the astounding conductor with Pavarotti and Freni in this legendary performance. You might catch a glimpse of me in Act 2 on the upper stage deck as a pedestrian in 1979.
Having heard only the more famous arias, but never having seen the whole opera, "La Bohème" touched me on so many levels. It is a perfect choice for this coronavirus Christmas season when poverty, love, grief and loss have been magnified for so many. That struggling artists are at the core of this opera makes it all the more poignant, since we know that the pandemic has inflicted enormous damage upon creatives and performers affiliated with the arts.
you are reminding me that I need to always try to include a (free) full opera as well....
When I looked back I couldn't believe that Boheme was the first piece and now we are rounding out the year with it. I thought it felt perfect but your connections are making me feel even better about the choice 🙏
Would you believe I played the whole thing all over again, then got a second call from another good friend, just as the performance ended? On each call I was sniffling and carrying on, and had to explain myself.😢
Thank you for creating this great community. I revisited this email (because I love La Bohème) and discovered the comments section and that was a delight!

My Bohème
Some of you are opera fans,
who really know the score.
Some of us are new to this,
just trying to hear some more.
I thought of this while doing chores
I didn't want to do,
So I'd been watching "La Boheme"
from start to finish, too!
I was crying like a baby,
with Marcello and Musetta
but the floodgates really broke,
when Mimi saw the cuffietta.
I'd sat transfixed for hours,
and I'd reached the final scene,
when much to my annoyance,
I heard my cell phone ring.
I tried to put YouTube on pause,
of course, I didn't succeed!
I had to take the call because
a good friend was in need.
As much as I regret that
I denied myself the end,
No doubt this opera taught me
the importance of a friend.

May your days be merry and bright!
