Tannhauser is a conflated mess between the original score and the Paris version, both of which are over the top. My recording was the controversial edition with Grace Bumbry as Venus. The opera is bloated and has elements of faux Christian piety as in Parsifal. Have never seen it on stage as it exhibits hedonism at The Met or the Crusades elsewhere.
