There is also a profoundly beautiful rendition by Caruso (in my LP collection). George Jellinek advised that Giordano played the piano for Enrico as well. Imagine when it was modern, contemporary as new Italian music circa 1910.

Interesting to consider how many great tenor arias don't rise above an A & how composers generate tension & drama without those Bs and Cs. "Vesti la giubba" (I Pagliacci) is one. "E la storia solita" (l'Arlessiana) is another (despite those tenors who insert a high B that is not written). One things YouTube lets one do is create a playlist of recordings and it's fun, and sometimes instructive, to do this with arias (as I'm sure you've done) to hear how artists approach such moments. Thanks for this terrific blog.
